In this video, I update you on our experience using the Starlink portability addon so far as we have traveled in the USA. We have made our way down through Washington, Oregon, California, and over into Arizona. Only in one of the twelve locations camped did I notice a reduction in service. That spot was very close to Sacramento. One evening I noticed some buffering and blurriness in the streaming video.

Ray, Merry Belated Christmas an a Happy Happy New Year. I talked to our friend Sie Edward and Eileen as they were headed East to his Mom and Dads.
Lola and I got Starlite while at GTNP this summer and have used it across the US as we headed to Florida. Was worried about it, but its worked Flawless as we have traveled as long as we have the Northern Sky. Right now we in Miami and its worked great. I have no regrets on getting it ourselves.
We are loading up today and heading back to Moore Haven, Fl. to our winter getaway we booked. You and the Misses enjoy your winter travels and thanks for all you do Ray. Until next time..

    Great to hear Rush.
We are camped on the Ajo Scenic Loop, which depending on the location can have poor cell service due to the hills but with the Starlink, no problem! :) Happy New Year to you in Florida

Still working. They took my money, including portability, for month number 3, and have had service for 2 days now into the 3rd month

Starlink Internet Update - Portability still working after 3 months out of country

We just got RV Starllink and holy cow is it a game changer!! $135/month and we can suspend service (and fees) on a month by month basis. My biggest concern was boondocking with a partially obscured sky. The other night we were in an oak grove in the Utah boonies with maybe only 50% clear sky and the dish performed exceptionally well.

And since we are paying for cable TV at our house, we can use our DirectTV app on the iPad to watch any of our network programming via Starlink. And finally, I turned on wifi calling on my iPhone and we can make and receive phone calls via Starlink. It's crazy!!

Thanks for all the Starlink information, Ray!

How can you make and receive phone calls? Isn’t it just Wifi?
  • Ray

Correct, it isn't a cell antenna, so it does not connect to cell towers. It connects to satellites that connect to large ground stations that connect to the internet.

Most people will use a feature on their cell plan called WiFi calling to connect to the cell network. Wi-Fi Calling lets you call or text on Wi-Fi networks. The Starlink has a router that setups up a personal WiFi network that we can connect any of our devices to.

Our cell plan is a cheap one that doesn't include WiFi calling. So, if we are outside of cell range, we use Skype for phone calls or messengers like Facebook to talk to family and friends over audio or video. With Skype, you can also pay for a number so others who don't have Skype installed can call you. So if we need to get important callbacks, we use that.

Hey Ray- We have just returned from some of the areas you were in. In Ajo, we stayed at Sonara Skies RV park- very small place with full hook ups- $30/ night. Great host and pleasant campers.
Regarding the portability we recently found out that we could not get portability anymore; has this affected you?

So far we still have the portability add-on active and working. Almost 5 months now. Been in the area of Death Valley NP where there is basically no cell coverage. This is where Starlink shines!

Do you have residential or RV service?
  • Ray

Residential service. Otherwise, I wouldn't need to have the portability addon as the RV service is already portable.

Starlink Internet Update - Bought a New Dish at 70% Off

Starlink Update - I took advantage of a 70% off deal for rural Canadians to buy a newer version of the dishy. The new one is half the weight and uses about half the power. Much better for off-grid camping.

We bought the Roam when it was $350 for Canadians. When the $199 came out our address was eligible so I submitted a ticket to see about a credit, but because we had purchased over a month prior, they declined.

We’re happy otherwise. Greg made 2 options- 3 actually. We ordered a second 75’ cable, which we are having to use in the current location to get far enough away to clear some trees. Most times it’s working well. In this case, the router lives in the little compartment with the vacuum in the basement of the 5 th wheel. Second option is dishys base mounted on a piece of plywood that he can U bolt to the top of the ladder. Third option is a length of 2” galvanized (short enough to nicely fit into the basement) that is mounted on the ladder same as flagpole buddy. The latter two options connect to the router with a cut cable and RJ45 connection. In this case, the router is mounted in the back of the 5th wheel on top of our rear cabinets and the cable runs down the back and outside beside the license plate to the RJ45. The other half of the cable stays with dishy and goes to the pole or the plywood option.

And then there is everything in between
