Mounting Solar Panels on Cougar 5th Wheel
I watched your videos where you mounted your solar panels on your RV roof and was thinking about doing the same with four 100 watt panels. My 5th wheel is very similar to yours and I think that I can use the same path down by the vent pipe to run the wires. I had a couple of questions though that I could not figure out from the video:
1. When you drilled the hole at the vent pipe, did you drill just outside the pipe? If so, does it just open up below the roof and let you run straight down? I didn't think that you ran it down inside the pipe, but wasn't sure how big to make the hole to get fully through.
2. When you are drilling for the mounting brackets, is the roof plywood? Or do you need to find studs to drill into? Or can you just put them where ever?
3. Looking at the mounting brackets that you used, it looked like it would be really difficult to get back under the panels after you tightened them down. Is it actually easy to get them back off incase you need to for any reason?
Yes, just outside the pipe not in the pipe, the hole drops inside the wall. It goes through a few rafters so about 6" down.
Here are some pix of my current install. I have access panels in the toilet room so you can see the pipe in the wall. Another picture shows where the pipe and wires come out under the bathroom sink.
For panel mounting, I placed the panels along the outside edges of the roof so I know for sure I'd hit at least a few solid beams. Roof is 3/8ths OBS board
I haven't had any reason yet to pull up the panels yet. The first pair has been up there since 2014
If I ever do I could add a second mount bracket.
But you could add an extra bracket or tilt brackets. I was mostly concerned with getting them flat on the roof as I didn't know how the airflow would be during traveling so didn't want them up too high.
