I have one of the Progressive Industries ones but preferred the one that installs inside the trailer. One less thing to think about and is always in place. Installation is pretty straightforward.

We have the 30 amp progressive pedestal. So far it hasn't found a fault but we don't plug in much. The PD is a well respected product I think you will be happy with it. Here is another thread with more info.

First thing we purchased was a Progressive 50Amp protector. Not long after we were at a campground and everything was fine until the protector tripped. The electric was spiking from 121 to 144 volts. It did it's job, no regrets....Purchased from Tweetys.com, they had best price at the time.

And there you have it. Worth every penny even if it only does it's job once.

Thanks to all for your feedback. I was leaning towards the progressive industries 30 amp and I’ll probably stick with that choice.

The Technology Research (34520-002 120 Volt 30 Amp Hardwire Surge Guard was the first addition I made to my new Class A Winnebago. It is 30 amp but they make the 50 amp too. I went with EMS-HW30C 30 Amp Hardwired RV Surge Protector by Progressive Industries. I installed it behind the fuse panel and put the remote viewer next to the panel.

The best surge protector is not a surge protector but and EMS (energy management system) box amd the cream of the crop is the Progressive Industries. They come in 2-flavors, a plug in at the pedestal style & hard wire unit that resides in your RV, for both 30 Amp & 50 Amp. The difference between a surge protector and an EMS, is the surge protector typically only protect against a large surge in current, a good thing for sure, while an EMS does that and also will shut down power to your rig if their is a fault or if power available falls below a certain threshold. My preference is for the hard wired, as it is one less thing to loose or have to deal with.

Definitely spend the extra money and get the EMS version of whichever brand you choose. We "managed" for a few years with the Progressive Industries 50 amp (not EMS), until one day last summer, a bird took out a transformer at the RV park we manage in summer. That took out one of the 3 phases in the electrical room, and we were on that phase. Our basic surge protector did not protect us. That power failure took out our inverter/converter and our solar controller, so we replaced the surge protector with the EMS model. Progressive would have replaced our original surge protector for free, but after spending nearly $1300 replacing the inverter/converter and solar controller, we chose to buy the EMS.

This is the one @Eddie Aileen installed for us. It's the Progressive Industries Hardwired 50A . I wish I had bought the remote display. I could not figure out a convient place to install it, but @Eddie Aileen came up with a solution. We are still boondocking on the mesa just out of St. Johns, AZ and haven't got to put it to use yet. We carried it around with us all over, in many campgrounds without it being installed. So glad we didn't have any electrical problems. Definately "living on the edge" as far as electrical protection was concerned, but we're set up now.
