Well, the 2019/20 Snowbird journey is coming to a premature end. The last stop, the Port Angeles Walmart. Stocked up on groceries in preparation for 14 days of self-isolation once we take the Coho ferry back to Vancouver Island. Lots of other BC plates overnighting here as well.

Is the 14 day self isolation required by the government, Ray? Due to coming in from the States?
  • Ray
    1.3k
Yes, anyone returning to Canada is told self isolate for 14 days so as to not bring it into the country and spread it around, that its the case coming from any country, not just the US. Early on there wasn't much teeth to it the order more of a please do it, but as things get worse it's becoming more and more a strict order, whether we are showing signs of being sick or not. It's for the best though at least I will know afterward I'm not going to pass any sickness along from outside Canada. These days I'm on no rush to mingle anyway as Anne has a condition that she takes immune system depressing drugs for.

Looks like you made an excellent decision on going back when you did. I just read on RVillage that Oregon has closed all of its state beaches and RV related sites/stops.

Seems like a prudent action, especially on the island. My wife has what I believe is a similar condition to Anne's, so we're happy to hunker down for awhile. Currently on day 3 of what is actually a 17 day period. Safe travels!

We just returned home in Sequim on Sunday. Went to store yesterday to stock up on groceries, now where just going to hunker down for the next few weeks and then see what goes from there.
Safe travels to the Island Ray, and stay safe!

We crossed today back onto Vancouver Island and drove up to Campbell River, good to be back to our summer haunts. All set up in the RV Park. Here is our 14-day self-isolation view.

Yes, as we drove up the coast, they were installing barricades to even the day-use parking lots. Looks like they are trying to eliminate all the tourists and daytrippers from the city.

Gee, a big, hand lettered sign that says, "I came from The States" would have kept people away as effectively as an ugly fence, dontcha think??!

Glad you're home, safe. Still looking for that toes up, estuary picture sometime... Take the boat out. :)

Get our regular estuary spot back on May 19th. I just glad to have a spot with all the public camping closed down and all the Canadian RVers beating a path back to Canada, there are very few places to take an RV to. We got the last spot in this RV park and they tell us they aren't going to take any more new reservations or book transients for the foreseeable future.

Hey Ray, thanks for leaving the United States green....with your money! Lord knows I’ve left plenty of my own north of the border over the past 35 years.

Y’all are welcome back in the fall.

The rule about 14 day isolation is now mandatory. Canada Customs and immigration now has the authority to check if people are in isolation and issue a fine. When you cross the border they take your phone number and address. If you appear sick they will isolate you in a hotel for 14 days at the governments cost.

This is the problem where do full time RV people go if parks turn you away. I get the quarantine part but if your home is a RV you need a place to park it. Local MP, MLA, and municipal representatives should be addressing this. I know the Federal Government on the Island used to have at least three military run campgrounds One near Victoria and Nanoose I think Comox is still there. They also own a substantial amount of property that is isolated. It would be easy enough to accommodate some travellers in these areas. Much like when bringing in the travellers by air they went to Trenton and were housed in a quarantine facility.

I think the problem is full-time RV living in Canada is a grey area, so I doubt the government is much aware of the scale of the issue, technically, as far as I know, at least in BC, living in an RV as a full-time residence is not allowed unless I guess you purchase/lease a special RV lot in certain RV resorts that accommodate full-timers and provide an official mailing address.

Most I know are fudging things and using relative's addresses as their official residence address and for mail. So I guess the government thinks you should just go there since that's what's listed for taxes and driver's license address as your home. Which makes sense and is our fall back plan if they start closing the RV Parks. My sister keeps a room open for me and we have a place to park the RV in her yard.

This situation is exposing a problem that's been going on a long time but no government has addressed the new reality of RV full-time living. Unfortunately, right now we are likely way down the list of what the government is going to put resources towards.

When you say “they” own it, as in the government, isn’t it really Canadian citizens that own it?

Our yearly snowbird trip to the southwest and back has come to an early conclusion as we hit the road back to Canada to self isolate for 14 days and hunker down in an RV Park on Vancouver Island.

In this video, I update you on how things are going with Anne and me and how the trip concluded. Once my quarantine period is over, I'll get to work on some fresh videos starting with an updated review on our 2018 Ram 3500, which is closing in on 35,000 KM. Sure in a general sense the Canadian people own it. That being said it is not like you can get a loan against it. You can't call it an asset. Like most government property it has organizations that manage it. The public is not allowed to set up on government property without permission. I was only trying to point out that certain government property sites like military bases have some recreational sites i.e. pools, gymnasiums, golf courses, and sometimes RV Campgrounds or even Cadet Camps barracks.
