What ISO do you set your camera at? I have a really old camera that only goes to 6400 ISO and then things are grainy. Your shot is so sharp - it's really nice!
Excuse me for budding in but drop your ISO on an older camera if 6400 is too 'noisy' (grainy). use the rule of 500. (some use 300 & some 600) When taking an untracked photo of the night sky using a camera on a tripod, this rule tells you how long you can expose before the stars begin to trail. You take the number 500 and divide by the focal length of your lens. For example, if you have a 20-mm wide angle lens, then 500 / 20 = 25. Experiment around & keep notes for what works for you & your camera.
Thank you for the tip! I get the star trails a lot, so too long of an exposure. I was at Zion NP a few months ago on a moonless night trying to get a good shot of The Watchman and planes kept going by! So I have all these pretty nice shots except for the dashed line of a airplane LOL! That area must be under the flight path for SLC or Vegas because they were coming over every minute or so. I'm still trying to get the hang of a digital camera. I think I did much better back in the day with my Nikon K1000 film camera :-)
I totally understand. I'm an old school film & darkroom guy myself. I finally told myself I gotta get with the new stuff. I sold all my film equipment and now have no other choice. I shoot mostly aperture priority or totally manual just as if I was using my old 35mm. Nice capture of Watchman!
