Had a little bit of rain and cloud yesterday in Powell River, but it started to clear out around sunset at Willingdon Beach, making for a beautiful scene. We snagged a nice campsite down near the ocean.
Since moving to Utah a few years ago we've been trying to camp at all the state parks. Last week was Antelope Island in the Great Salt Lake. Beautiful area even though the lake is super low. Hundreds of bison roaming around and we had a bachelor herd of seven come visit us at our campsite every afternoon.
The leaves of a Bigleaf Maple are the largest in Canada. Typically the leaves are 15-30cm wide and five-lobed. The leaf has five lobes, blunt irregular teeth on the edges, are dark and shiny green on the top and a lighter green on the underside. This green turns to yellow and gold once autumn comes and then the leaves fall off in near the end of October and into the beginning of November.
This is a time of year where the Bigleaf Maple stands out in the coniferous forests of Vancouver Island, and when a hike through the forest provides a glimpse as to what the forests of eastern Canada look like in the fall.
That's the biggest Maple leaf I've ever seen!!! Beautiful shot Herb. Fall has finally arrived here in Southern Utah too. The monsoons lasted until a few weeks ago so the colors are expecially vibrant this year. Since my husband's truck matches the fall colors, we just had to take it up on the mountain for a photo shoot :-)
They are "protected" by law. You can't harass or do much to get rid of them. They do a lot of damage. During the Summer salmon run they have a feast. Very common for sport fishermen to have one one on the line and them bang; all you have is the head.
