Yikes! I haven't had the puffy jacket on in a while! We are a little north of Sacramento and camped at an Army Corp of Engineers (COE) campsite. It's 5C 41F right now, as a cold front is moving through central California. But the forecast looks good; it will be warming up to high 20s C and 80s F by early next week.
We are looking forward to exploring the Sacramento Wildlife Refuge complex. Especially my photographer wife Anne :) fws.gov/refuge/sacramento -
Still a bit chilly in California, but temps are on the rise. Today we scoped out some of the wildlife refuges north of Sacramento. Most of the larger winter bird flocks have left, but lots of ducks and smaller birds to view, and a relaxing way to spend a crisp spring day. It's nice to see California looking so lush after the copious winter rains.

Here are some pretty spring views from around lower Stony Creek, which feeds the Black Butte Lake reservoir located between Sacramento and Redding. The pink shrubs are nice to look at, but from what I gather, they are Salt Cedar, an invasive plant.

Another fun visit to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge today. barely anyone else was there. It's warmed up! Low wind and mid-70s, low 20s C. Lots of interesting shorebirds and ducks here right now. Cool to see the pretty White-faced Ibis that is fairly rare up in BC. Anne had her big lens out in the backseat, so I'm sure some nice shots will come, and I'll stick together a video. :)

Goodbye California, and hello Oregon. We left Black Butte Lake Orland Butte Campground after an enjoyable six-night stay and made the trek over the Siskiyou Pass and into Oregon today. Great weather, low 70s F, and not much traffic or wind. Mt. Shasta looked gorgeous with a good snowpack, and I noticed Shasta Lake looking full to the top! We're going to casino camp for a few nights, then head to the coast for a bit.

A look at the Black Butte Lake Recreation Area, located between Sacramento and Redding, California, about 10 miles west of Interstate 5. The video includes some dashcam footage and information about the two campgrounds, Orland Butte and Buckhorn.
It also includes video footage from the Black Butte Dam observation overlook and down along Stony Creek. While camping at Orland Butte, we enjoyed trips to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge, about a 1/2 hour drive away. It made a perfect base station.
